  • Solid-phase extraction-gas chromatography was used to analyze the existence of endocrine disruptors in sewage and sludge of a sewage disposal system in Handan, China. The following five categories of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) were detected: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates (PAEs), phenols, and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). All concentrations of endocrine disruptors were present at levels expressed in ng except for PCBs, which were at the level of μg. Average concentrations of the five EDC categories in sewage and sludge were between 9.43 ng/L to 60.82 μg/L and 43.94 ng/g to 167.45 μg/g, respectively. Following treatment, the average removal rate of the five EDC categories was between 16.6% to 77.9%. In the process of sewage treatment, PCBs, PAHs, and OCPs were mainly removed by sludge adsorbing. However, PAEs and phenols were mainly removed by biodegradation.
