Formation and elimination of brown carbon aerosol: A review
-
Abstract: Black carbon (BC) is the main light-absorbing substance in the atmospheric aerosols. It is found that some organic carbon (OC) can be light-absorbing in the UV-Visible region, and the absorption intensity increases sharply with decreasing wavelength in the recent studies. This type of brownish yellow organic carbon is defined as BrC (brown carbon). Due to its special light absorption properties and photochemical reactivity, it is believed to have potential impact on global climate and atmospheric environmental quality. Based on the past three decades of research, especially in the past decade, the optical properties, chemical composition and source of brown carbon have been basically recognized, but at the same time there are problems of weak and incomplete basic research. This paper pointed out that secondary generation was another important source of brown carbon, besides primary emissions. However, the precursors and reaction mechanisms involved in the secondary generation of brown carbon had not yet been formed, and its aging elimination process also urgently needed. This paper summarized the current types and mechanisms of secondary brown carbon generation and elimination, which aimed to point out the latest developments and the existing problems of it. It also could provide reference and basis directions for future research.
