Residue and Distribution of Mercury in Feathers of Grey-cheeked Fulvetta (Alcippe morrisonia) around Abandoned Mine

Abstract: Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that can cause irreversible damage to organisms. We measured the mercury concentrations in primary feathers, secondary feathers, tail feathers, and down feathers from Grey-cheeked Fulvettas (Alcippe morrisonia) living in Daxin lead-zinc mine tailings, Guangxi, Southern China. We found the mercury distribution pattern in the four types of feathers to be: tail feathers>secondary feathers>primary feathers>down feathers. The tail feathers were significantly positively correlated with primary flight feathers in the Hg concentrations. Therefore, tail feathers may be the best choice for mercury pollution monitoring in birds. Comparing with passerine birds in other polluted areas, Grey-cheeked Fulvetta has a strong mercury accumulation capacity, and it may be a good indicator species for mercury pollution monitoring in tropical and subtropical forests. In addition, Grey-cheeked Fulvetta is the nuclear species of bird mixed-species flocks in tropical and subtropical forests, which always lead birds in foraging and vigilance. Therefore, understanding the effects of mercury pollution on Grey-cheeked Fulvetta is of great importance to the bird community maintenance.
