Horizontal Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Environment: A Review
-
Abstract: Antibiotic resistance genes are a major emerging environmental pollutant of concern as they reduce the efficacy of antibiotic medical treatment and consequently threaten public health. Horizontal gene transfer of such genes between bacteria greatly accelerates the spread of antibiotic resistance, intensifying the public health risk. Thus, the mobility of antibiotic resistance genes has drawn increasing attention worldwide. This review introduces the molecular mechanisms of the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. It is summarized that the variation of these mechanisms amongst different environments. Based on this current progress, future research directions are proposed. Overall, this review aims to provide insight for the future survey and control of antibiotic resistance genes in the environment.
